I got out to the Spring River at about 10:00 AM and it was a balmy 23 degrees. There were a couple of guys fishing near the hatchery outflow. Otherwise, the place was deserted.
I started out fishing a 1/16 ounce Zig Jig, and I caught my first 5 trout on the jig… But, I didn’t feel like the water was quite right for jig fishing this trip, so I switched to an in-line spinner, and I started to catch more trout. I went down about 1.5 miles from Dam 3, fishing the pools and riffles. I ended up landing 36 trout (22 rainbows and 14 Browns). Most of the Rainbows were typical stocker size, but I did have one Rainbow that was right at 14″. The Browns ran up to 15.25″, with the majority of them between 12 and 15″.
I was surprised to catch that many Brown Trout on the Spring River. The only other time I’ve fished here, I landed one Brown. I ended up fishing until dark, and the warmest it got was 30 degrees. My guides on my rod constantly iced up throughout the day, but a quick dunk in the warmer spring water would clear them out quick. It was definitely a cold trip, but I had more fun than sitting on my couch.
