A Trout Bum’s BlogPosted by Steve Brigman on March 10th, 2012
My wife is always scolding me about taking on too much. I seldom argue, knowing she’s mostly right. But launching Ozark Trout Bum was something I have been thinking about for a long time, and I was determined to see it come to fruition. For a couple of years now, I’ve been co-hosting “The Edge,” a bass fishing companion podcast to the Bass Edge television program. On that podcast, I serve as writer and co-host, but the technical stuff is all handled by a sound engineer. Well, I’ve taken on that technical role myself for OTB, and it’s been quite a learning experience. You’ll hear some of my less-than-perfect recordings on the show, and I ask that you bear with my learning curve. We’re teaching an old dog new tricks here, but I’m catching on. I’m enjoying it, and that’s really what matters. Launching a podcast is like war; there are unintended consequences. For me, that included a few technical snafus, but on the whole I discovered some great parts of this I hadn’t thought much about. It has been great getting back in touch with so many friends I hadn’t spoken to in a while. It was great to hear about Duane Doty’s Alaskan gig. We met on an Alaskan fishing trip several years back, and the next year he was my guide, so we spent a little off mic reminiscing. Duane Hada is a longtime friend, always the great interview with a unique perspective. This time he talked about “lawn trout” and “M & M’s of the trout world.” I hadn’t talked to John Berry since he asked me to help judge a shore-lunch cookoff several years ago. In my newspaper column, I referred to him as “head cook-off dude.” We’re thrilled to have his decades of angling experience on “Strategies for Success.” Time to start putting the next one together, but I think I’ll slip down to the river and do a little fishing: research, we call it in the podcast biz.
