Opening day Catch & Release season At Montauk. About 80 anglers braved the below freezing temps to come out and play with the trout today.
The fishing was GREAT with everyone I spoke to catching fish. Most anglers were using egg Glo-ball (Initiation dough bait) But midge pattern was catching fish some times on every drift. I only fished one fly all day and never even thought about changing it for any other pattern.
Tomorrow I will be switching out some old fly’s for new patterns to test them out. Iceing on the eyes and line was really bad all day. But early every cast and retrieve the ice had to be removed. I forgot to get any Loons Ice out for the line. I checked the lodge and they had none in stock. If you plan to come down during the very cold weather you might want to get a tube before you come.
