James River

One of the major tributaries of Table Rock Lake is the James River, which flows in from the north towards Springfield, Missouri. Its fishing history dates back to the days when there were not any dams on the White River. The White, and rivers like the James River, were then floated by outfitters who fished for smallmouth and largemouth bass, camping and cooking on the riverbanks for their clients. The James is still floated by many anglers in search of the smallmouth bass, which can grow well over 20 inches in length. There are several liveries on the river that supply canoes and shuttles to various accesses up and down the river.

Got off work earlier than usual tonight, so I decided to go poke around Lake Springfield. Boy, am I glad I made that decision! I wasn’t expecting much, just wanted to get my mind off some things, and it was well worth it. I fished along with a ned rig for a bit, couple of bites, pulled in one very small bass, but surprisingly little action. So I decided to change it up. read more…

Nice trip but short

Posted by Phil Lilley on July 19th, 2016

Last Tuesday (07-12-16) at this time my son and I were floating from Hootentown to Ponce. Gage height at Galena was about 4.6 and the water had a nice emerald color. We got on the water about 7:30 and I had my first smallmouth at 7:45. We got in about two hours of fishing and then the rain started. We waited for about an hour of what we thought was a little squaw passing through but that wasn’t the case. So we started paddling for the take out (wasn’t sure how fast the river would change, it was raining hard). However, fishing was great with plenty of action. Caught  several smallies in the 12″ range, one 16″er, a nice little fat largemouth, some rockbass and a catfish all on a Square Bill 1.0. Really enjoyed this short float and will make a point to get back to it. Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure. read more…

A short report…. I was going to go fishing on Friday but then it rain on Thursday.  By Saturday the river was going down, but rain was on it’s way Saturday morning….. I went anyway. Rained on me most of the morning. I thought I was going smallmouth fishing but as you can see by the pictures I guess I went catfish fishing. I can’t seem to catch a fish when it’s raining, before or after yes, but not during. I’ve tried noisy baits, fishing slower but no luck. Maybe I should try topwater. I caught fish but the 2 biggest were catfish. read more…
