Elk River

The Elk River flows out of the Ozarks hills in southwest Missouri and is well sought after by summer floaters, also lovingly called the “aluminum hatch.” But don’t be fooled by its high volume of canoe traffic. The Elk River is a great fishery, fed by two rivers, good creeks to float and fish in their own right - the Big and Little Sugar. The Elk runs into Grand Lake in northeast Oklahoma, where a good spawning and feeding run of white bass and hybrid bass make spring and early summer special for fishing trips.

C & R’s Elk River fishing report, Sept 19

Posted by Phil Lilley on September 20th, 2013

Couldn’t decide if I was going on the Elk Thur. for most of the day. Sure glad we went,,,,,,Floated from 4:45 till dark. Most big fish we ever caught in one 3 hr. outing. Lots of large mouths because we did the flat stretch from Pineville down to riverside. Sure miss the current that that stretch use to have. Caught about 30, but about 10-12 were from 15″-18″s. Buzz bait, floating repala, tubes. Yahoo……………..Saw the resident bald eagle too.

Ollie’s Elk River fishing report, June 9

Went down to the Big Sugar yesterday to what was going on.  Got on the water by 8:00 and nobody else was around.  That’s always a good thing!  Cloudy skies all around me and I’m thinking it’s going to be a good day.  Started off real slow with only a couple small smallies and then the action picked up a bit.  Started out throwing a plastic worm and caught a few then switched over to a fluke, but not much there.  Put on the lizard then things picked up a bit more.  Let’s see, it rained on me for awhile.  That felt pretty good.  Then I switched back over to the worm and caught this nice largemouth for the biggest of the day.  By now it was noon and I was getting tired of catching the smaller ones so I decided to call it a day.  As I was pulling out Sugar Island was putting in a party crowd.  They were quite entertaining. read more…
